The extra remote that can be attached to the projector is a nice touch….a delighter in the Kano rankings.
Super portable, and once the initial setup is complete, takes only a minute to turn on and be viewing the Home Screen.
Unlike the Mogo 3, this new model has the batteries built into the projector itself, so you do not need the stand in order to use battery power. It will give you around 2.5 hours use from the battery and it defaults to ECO mode which is about at 50% level of brightness. You can choose to increase the brightness but you will consume your battery charge at a faster pace.
Overall, very impressive portable projector made even better with the recent release of the Mogo 4. You will notice XGIMI introduced two models of the Mogo 4….this LED version at 450 ISO lumens and a tri-laser advertised at 550 ISO lumens. I’ve seen both side by side and it is almost impossible to see a difference in the picture brightness. Maybe the laser has slightly better contrast and color saturation, but suggest you save the $300 and go with the LED version.
The picture quality between the LED and Laser models is very similar. The Laser version does have more vibrant colors and a touch more sharpness (very very minor), but unless you’re comparing them side by side (like I did), the difference is noticeable. The brightness (lumens) looked just about identical to me even though it says they are 100 lumen different.
One area where the Laser MoGo did have an edge is auto keystone correction. When repositioning the projectors, the Laser MoGo consistently gave me a more accurate, squared off image with less manual adjustment.
The built in Google TV works flawlessly it’s responsive, and supports all the major streaming apps I use. Even though the projector is 1080p, the image quality looks great. Of course, if you’re comparing it to a 4K projector like the Horizon S Pro, you’ll notice a difference, but that’s expected. For a portable projector, it performs very well. The built in speaker is also surprisingly good for its size, it gets nice and loud.
Overall, if you're deciding between the MoGo 4 models, I’d go with the LED version (this version). The laser versions slight advantages in image quality (mainly vibrant colors) and keystone correction do not justify the extra $300 in my opinion, especially if you're not comparing them side by side.
1080p native resolution so very high picture quality, excellent optics, automatic focus and automatic keystone adjustment, so pretty much all you need to do is point the projector at the screen and adjust the distance to set the size of the picture -- the projector does the rest to automatically focus and give you a perfectly square image, even if you're projecting up, down or sideways (or a combination).
The built-in gimbal makes adjustments easy and convenient, and it doubles as a lens protector when traveling.
Built-in GoogleTV, so you can install apps (some are pre-installed like YouTube or PrimeVideo). The MoGo 4 features a HDMI input (for a game console, BluRay player or other TV box) and a USB port, as well as a stereo minijack for audio output. WiFi supports 5GHz networks and you can very easily pair Bluetooth speakers as well.
The projector has built-in audio, but don't put too much faith into the "Harman Kardon" name... They are not able to break the laws of physics, and there is only so much power and fidelity you can cram into such a small space that already contains complex optics and electronics. However, it's worth noting that the projector is whisper quiet, you can barely hear it -- quite the contrast to most projectors which have very loud fans.
While image quality is excellent, it's not the brightest and easily washes out in daylight unless you have black out curtains. This is to be expected for this type of compact, portable projector at this price point.
There is also an ambient light feature with a lens that attaches to the front of the projector, but it's pretty gimmicky in my opinion and I don't see myself using it -- why waste precious projector lamp lifetime when you can use a cheap device to do the same?
About price... Note that there are multiple bundles available for this product, as of this writing one includes the battery stand and the panda carry case for the same price, so check the different bundles for possible bargains.
TL;DR:
- Great picture quality with fast, auto adjustment of keystone and focus - but brightness is limited
- Built-in sound (but not very loud)
- Ultracompact with gimbal and base doubling as lens protection for transport, clever design
- Easy to use Bluetooth speakers
- Easy to install apps (TV streaming, etc...)
- HDMI input
- Enough battery life for a fully wireless backyard movie night
